Move Like Lightning, Hit Like Thunder with Mark Stewart JKD

“One of the unique things in JKD is its Lead’s (Punch) Range is somebody else’s kicking range,” said Mark Stewart, A JKD Instructor descending from the Bruce Lee-Ted Wong Lineage, on the first day of the Jeet Kune Do seminar held on the 13th and the 14th day of March 2010.

Long Range attacks, Intercepting, PIA (Progressive Indirect Attack) and ABC’s (Attack by Combination) were the main course during the first day; while we covered Medium to Close Range on the second day, also incorporating a few trapping and takedown techniques.

Mark was a very personable person yet remained with a little of the classic martial arts instructor in him. He called everyone by name, which says a lot. He gave corrections and complements in a balanced manner. He is, overall an amazing Instructor.

Simplicity and Directness was emphasized starting the first day. The Straight Lead Punch—warranting an entire book by Teri Tom—quickly took all the beginners attention away. It allows a person to deliver maximum force in his punches by using the proper structure and bone alignment. I mean not everyone has big muscles to deliver a strong enough punch, but everyone has bones, and that’s where it perfectly makes sense. It’s fast, it’s efficient and it’s deadly. And it’s perfect for women too.

Next we practiced the Straight Lead in its variations. The Straight, Shovel and Corkscrew; the High, Low, High and vice versa combos; all executed lightning fast. Mark moved in a fluid effortless motion, which made you think it lacking power, but by the time it hit the pads, it was thunder.

Next we covered the kicks, which I wouldn’t go into much detail here. The Hook Kick was especially powerful. We incorporated the Lead/ kick combo, Mark flashing with the punch and the next thing you knew, you were hit in the groin or the stomach.

PIA’s consisted of conditioning the enemy to believe you are going to hit him in the face but is really setting him up for a kick. ABC’s involves unleashing a flurry of attacks the enemy wouldn’t realize what hit him.

If Long range is outside your kicking range, Medium range is within the kicking range, while Close range is your arm range. The Long Range fighting basically says “You can’t hit me, but I can.” The Medium range says “You’re basically done for” and the close range says “You’re dead.” Emphasizing the period.

The difference between JKD’s and other MA’s takedowns is that if you have to resort to taking down your opponent then you’re just going to have to kill him.
The seminar was filled with practical and precise techniques for real life fighting. And if you want to fight like Bruce Lee did. Then this one’s right on the investment.
